American Oak Resort is located in beautiful Houghton Lake Mi. We offer newly remodeled cabins, chalets and a 3-bedroom apartment. Each with the comforts of home. The cabins are more rustic, and the chalets are more modern.

 

 We are located on M-55 in Houghton Lake. Approximate drive time from Detroit (696&I-75) is about 3-1/2 hours. Drive time from Grand Rapids about 2-1/2 hours, Saginaw about 1-1/2 hours, and from Lansing about 2 hours. Take Exit 212 East from US-27 and Exit 227 West from I-75.

 

Summer Recreation
 We have a sand volleyball pit, beach area with sandy beach (no seawall), children's play areas, 300 ft dock and firepit, all on the resort grounds. We also rent pontoons, waverunners, ski-boats and fishing boats. Houghton Lake is 22,000 acres, great for boating, fishing, skiing, waverunners and jet-skis. Also many miles of O.R.V. trails are nearby.

 

Winter Recreation
We have snowmobile rental and ice shanties available at the resort. Ice fishing is very popular, with the walleye being big for sport fisherman. Houghton Lake has 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Cross-country skiing, downhill skiing all located nearby. 


Cabins


 All cabins feature knotty-pine walls throughout, giving off a more rustic feeling. They feature two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, and living room with sofa-sleeper. The kitchen and bathroom have ceramic tile floors, and the living room and bedrooms are carpeted. Bathroom has a full bathtub with shower. All cabins have been remodeled in 2001 and 2002.Each cabin also features the following items.

Chalets


All chalets feature drywall throughout and textured ceilings. In contrast to the cabins, they are styled more modern. They feature two bedrooms with closets downstairs. They also have a 15x20 loft upstairs with two additional queen size beds. They have a tile floored bathrooms and bathtubs with showers. Chalet #19 also has and additional bathroom with stand-up shower, sink and toilet. All chalets have ceiling fans in the loft and living rooms. All chalets have been remodeled in 2001 and 2002.Each cabin also features the following items.

Limberlost Lounge

The Limberlost lounge is about 4 blocks east on M-55 across from Spicer's Boat City. They are located on the water, and are a family place by day, and one of the local Hotspots by night. They have a large gameroom on one side, and the bar and dining on the other. They have a variety of dinners, from steaks to fish/seafood. At night they feature live entertainment on the weekends, and they have 15-20 televisions showing sporting events and etc. The nighttime crowd tends to be the under 40 group. It is about a 5 minute walk from the resort.


Marv& Di's Pressure Crack Pub

 This local pub is in Prudenville, about 4 miles east on M-55 (next to Bank One). They also have steak's, burgers and sandwiches. This pub is the Karaoke hot-spot on the weekends as well as some weekdays. You will find people here of all ages, from 21 to 70+ and not be able to leave without your cheeks hurting from laughing. The entertainment here is provided by the locals and the karaoke singers, so even if you don't sing you will have a good time.

This restaurant is also in Prudenville about 4 miles east of the resort. The have a broad range of food, probably one of the largest menu selections in town. This is not the place to go for a cheap quick dinner, more elegant dining. They have a large variety of dinners, from steaks to seafood. They also have a small lounge.

Summer Recreation

The resort features a sandy beach (no seawall), sand volleyball pit, kids play areas, horseshoe's and we have a 300ft dock. We have small 14ft  fishing boats and a paddle boat for guest use. Guests are allowed to bring their boats or waverunners. We also rent ski-boats, waverunners and pontoon boats. If guests are not comfortable driving a boat we can take you and your family water skiing, tubing and parasailing (weather permitting), rates vary.

Winter Recreation

The winter turns Houghton Lake into a winter playground. We have 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Houghton Lake, and easy access to the trails from the resort. Ice fishing is very popular as the lake freezes early in the winter and thaws usually end of March or early April. We rent snowmobiles and shanties here at the resort and in most cases can give you a quick tour to the trails. We also do daily tours around the area, rates vary. Tip-Up-Town is a large winter festival in January, and the resort is walking distance (3 blocks) from the festival site.

Fishing

 Houghton Lake is home to many species of fish. We have Walleye, Bass, Pike, Perch, Crappie, Bluegill and probably a few others. Lyman's on the lake can set you up with all of your fishing needs and answer any of your questions. They are located about 3 miles west of us on M-55. Kids can fish off the end of the dock, and probably expect to catch something...who knows what. A short venture in a rowboat (we also rent motors) will get you to a decent spot for the bigger fish. Whether you are a sport fisherman or just out for fun, Houghton Lake fishing should satisfy your needs.

From I-75 
I-75 North to Exit #227 (M-55 West). Follow M-55 6 miles into Prudenville. Continue past Burger King and M-18 approx. 4 miles. You will pass Wal-Mart on you left. We are approx. 1/2 mile west of Wal-Mart on you right hand side. Turn right on Jefferson St. and the office is 1/2 block down on right hand side (112 Jefferson).
 
From US-27 
US-27 North to Exit #212 (M-55 East). Follow M-55 approx. 2 miles East passing Shell Mart on your right. Continue past Shell Mart about 1-1/2 miles and pass the Pines Theatre on you right. We are about 200 yards past the Pines Theatre, on your left directly across the street from Collins Elementary School. Turn left on Jefferson St. and the office is 1/2 block down on right hand side (112 Jefferson).
